Founded in 1887, the Southport Association for Southport Improvement is one of the oldest neighborhood associations in the country.

Over 100 years ago, Sausquanaug's founders began their work by laying flagstone sidewalks, most of which still remain on village streets. Today, our work has become increasingly complex and time-consuming because of the rapid growth and escalating land values of the area. While some change is inevitable, we believe that both land development and renovations to existing buildings must be in keeping with the architectural and historic legacy of Southport. To achieve our goals we have an annually elected Board of Trustees whose work is supported by approximately seventy active volunteers. Some our major tasks include maintaining a constant vigilance on zoning, Historic District and Southport Harbor matters, and supporting Town zoning regulations and State laws favorable to historic preservation.

We also have volunteers who work closely with the Town on such projects as laying new sidewalks and installing new street lighting, while others oversee Sasquanaug's properties. These include Robinson Cottage; the Sea Lodge on Southport Beach; Southport Park, a twelve-acre wildlife and bird sanctuary bordering Old Post Road; and the fountain at the foot of Main Street.

Because we are politically active and lobby to effect legislative change, we are a non-tax exempt, not-for-profit organization. In 1984 a tax-exempt group, the Southport Conservancy, Inc., was formed to accept tax-exempt donations of land and money. As sister organizations with complementary strengths and shared goals, Sasquanaug and the Southport Conservancy work together closely to preserve our community.

Sasquanaug's membership is open to all who embrace the goals of protecting, preserving and beautifying Southport. At present, our membership includes approximately 350 families in Southport, on Sasco Hill, and in other parts of Fairfield. Won't you support our efforts by becoming a member and, if you have the time, an active volunteer?
